Amazon AWS Outage Highlights IT/Management Incompetence

The AWS outage provides another example of Bigtech Addiction and why It's time to bring "Buy Local" [back?] to 'cloud' and other IT services.

Like the Crowdstrike debacle highlighting the incompetence that plagues the I_dioT field (particularly management) via their continued use of the notoriously unreliable/insecure MS Windows...

Spec'ing/using AWS for anything ranks almost as bad in the 'stupid IT decisions' department. So for anyone bothering to keep track of such things you've just been given a whole list of entities that have incompetent people making their IT decisions and/or IT Systems Engineering recommendations.

I could see maybe using AWS for some ad-hoc/one-off beta testing, or development environment. But even then it's probably simpler/faster/cheaper/etc. to just spin up a VPS or whatever. I used an AWS free-tier service once for a few months and from that brief experience I couldn't imagine trying to use their horrendous system for anything serious, much less for any kind of significant infrastructure. I'd rather setup a high-availability, clustered system and a Content Delivery Network from scratch.

In any case, an in-house or practically any other solution (eg. local independent/SMB host or VPS provider) would be better than AWS in every way.

Since the 90's, I've recommended the use of open source software and decentralized (in-house, local) services for many reasons. Among those reasons is self-reliance, or independence from [insert BigTechMegaCorp here]. And related to that is security, which in a more broad sense also includes personal data privacy, online safety, fully auditable code (unlike proprietary software), etc. These things are just as important for an organization or company as they are for an individual.

IT/Computer/Network/Systems/Cyber- Security is a balance of risks.
A simplified equation:
more knowledge and control = less risks
and vice versa.

For software (including servers and related network services) to best meet such goals of security, they should be run on the end users' own hardware/systems. And maintenance/adminstration should be done by the same end user(s), or otherwise under their full control/discretion. Giving up this control to a 'cloud' service (or any third party) represents an exponential increase in risks (ie. less secure). The larger the third party (and/or number of third parties), the greater the risks involved. It's basic math.

In-house IT systems will, in almost all cases, be the best solution. All the services provided by bigtechs are available at the independent or small business / local community level, and often at better quality using the exact same or better software/hardware solutions. Additionally, the level of expertise among personnel at any bigtech is unlikely to be any greater than your local 'IT guy'. Often the equivalent to your local linux server/network admin at a bigtech consists of several off-shore or H1-B techs, at least half of which probably only know Windows and how to use whatever management front-end they were trained to use. The whole 'cloud' and [everything]-As-A-Service crap has always been pure marketing nonsense.

If you're just writing TPS reports and playing games (or creating online dating and such sites full of scammers), then maybe MS Windows desktops and Azure on AWS is for you.
